Matchmaker II project: Integrated WEFE Nexus and Nature-based Solutions benefit 6 farms in Jordan and Palestine |

Sweden, the Union for the Mediterranean and GWP-Med inaugurated integrated technical solutions for sustainable agriculture in Salt Governorate, Jordan on 8 May 2023. This marked the succesful completion of the Matchmaker II project, funded by Sweden through UfM, and implemented by GWP-Med, which provided proof of WEFE Nexus benefits in the field. Technical solutions applied involved constructing wetlands to further treat wastewater from secondary to tertiary level, to irrigate new climate-resilient plants, with pumping powered by a new installation of renewable solar energy in 6 farms in Jordan and Palestine, in a cross-country context. |

"Zero Drop" program by GWP-Med & Coca-Cola in Crete saves 12,000,000 litres of water annually |
The "Zero Drop" water resources protection program, implemented by GWP-Med in collaboration with the Municipality of Heraklion, Greece, with funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, succeeded in saving 12 million litres of water annually by improving irrigation water supply systems. The works were inaugurated on 15 June 2023, in Heraklion, in the presence of local authority high-level representatives and the national press. |

1st Regional Roundtable on the WEFE Nexus in the Mediterranean: Promoting Innovations, investments and upscaling of solutions |
|
The 1st Regional WEFE Nexus Roundtable in the Mediterranean on "Promoting innovation, investments and upscaling of solutions" took place on 6 & 7 June 2023, in Rabat, Morocco. Its aim was to provide a framework for multi-stakeholder dialogue among Mediterranean countries and stakeholders to further advance Nexus understanding and facilitate cross-fertilization among institutions, organizations and practitioners. The Roundtable was organized within the joint initiative of UfM, Barcelona Convention and the EU, by GWP-Med and the WES Project Team and was hosted by Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment and Water and Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, with contributions by and in the framework of the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme Child Project 2.2. on the WEFE Nexus, the EU WES Project, the Sida/UfM MENA Water Matchmaker 2 Project and the PRIMA WEFE4MED Project. Among its key conclusions, the elaboration of a Strategic Framework for WEFE Nexus in the Mediterranean source-to-sea continuum was unanimously recommended. Follow up steps are underway. |

How can we exploit scientific results and accelerate sustainable policies along WEFE Nexus lines? As leader of the H2020 REXUS project Communication & Dissemination activities, GWP-Med participated in the Nexus Regional Stakeholder’s Forum of Stakeholders in South Europe, organised by NexusNet COST Action in Croatia on 28 September 2023. The Forum focused on Nexus theory and practice in the Mediterranean and was co-organised by several EU Horizon and PRIMA sister projects, including Nexogenesis, Bionext, iMermaid, MagoPrima, Arsinoe and Retouch Nexus and REXUS. |

🎥 "Water Is In Our Hands" initiative continues its journey in the Greek island of Lipsi |
GWP-Med and Reckitt's Finish are implementing the 4th year of the "Water Is In Our Hands" initiative in the Greek island of Lipsi, providing concrete tools to combat water scarcity and save water at home. The GWP-Med team distributed special kits to 250 households and the island’s tourist accommodation facilities, and shared simple tips for saving water in the household. On Thursday, 8 July, a public event was held in the island's Cultural Center to mark the collective adoption of a 1.5 million litre water saving goal over one year. |

📰North Macedonia validates IWRM Action Plan |
On 22 March 2023, North Macedonia’s IWRM Action Plan was officially validated, after being presented by the Ministry of Environment to Ministries, scientific and public institutions and NGOs. This was the outcome of a 10-month government-led multi-stakeholder consultation process in 2022-2023, organised with the assistance and facilitation of GWP-Med, aiming to formulate and prioritise appropriate responses to tackle the country's key institutional, legislative and technical challenges to water resources management. |
📰Tunisia's IWRM Action Plan lays the foundation for transformative approach to water management |
Tunisia's IWRM Action Plan has been validated after a national dialogue that took place from June 2022 to March 2023, led by the Water Resources Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Fishery and facilitated by GWP-Med. It includes 13 actions for a total cost of around 10 million euros over a five-year period (2023-2028). |
This year’s digital annual report presents snapshots of GWP's key achievements, partnerships and events, and includes stories that illustrate how GWP's work advances global and national water security objectives and partnerships. Overall for 2022, GWP activities influenced 51 key governance outcomes, contributed to 6 river basin agreements and management frameworks and 16 investment plans, strategies and budget committments. |
