On 4 December 2024, a new water replenishment project was inaugurated in Korinthos, Greece. Implemented by GWP-Med, in partnership with the Municipality of Korinthos and funded by Crown Holdings, the new project upgrades the city's main water treatment plant, saving 26 million litres of water annually. The initiative significantly enhances water efficiency, ensuring resilience against water scarcity challenges exacerbated by climate change. The inauguration ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including local authorities, representatives from Crown and GWP-Med. |

The "Resilient Thessaly" project, implemented by GWP-Med with funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation and in close collaboration with the Municipality of Trikala, was completed at a special event on 2 October 2024.This intervention will act as a protective shield against possible future extreme weather events, providing a solution to the recurring flooding problem facing parts of the city. The event was attended by national and local authorities, and Coca-Cola and GWP-Med representativies. |

On 31 October 2024, the Alter Aqua project, implemented by GWP-Med together with The Energy and Water Agency and funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation celebrated its latest achievements: 3 new traditional reservoirs restored, and a new digital 'Reservoir Trail' created, taking visitors on a self-guided tour across Malta's historical cisterns. By preserving traditional practices and restoring historic water systems, the Alter Aqua Project shows how they can be adapted to support modern sustainability goals, offering practical solutions for water conservation across the region. The event was attended by national and local authorities, and Coca-Cola and GWP-Med representativies. |

The regional Roundtable on ‘Catalysing Financing for Climate Change Adaptation in the Mediterranean Coastal Area: The Role of the Private Sector’, took place on 2-3 December 2024, in Athens & online. It aimed to elaborate on challenges and opportunities, roles and responsibilities as well as financing mechanisms and tools for engaging the private sector for climate change adaptation in the Mediterranean, with an emphasis on the coastal area in a Source to Sea approach. The Regional Roundtable was organised in the framework of the GEF MedProgramme SCCF Project and the EU Water & Environment Support (WES) Project. It was jointly hosted by GWP-Med, Plan Bleu/RAC (UNEP/MAP) and EU WES Project, with the support of PAP/RAC. |

Funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe Programme, the SpongeWorks project was launched on 1 September 2024. A consortium of 28 partners led by the coordination of Leibniz University Hannover, Germany, and Deltares, Netherlands, will implement for the next four years 19 "sponge measures" in three large demonstrator sites in France, Greece and a transboundary basin shared between the Netherlands and Germany. Its aim is to enhance water retention while contributing to climate resilience and ecosystem health. GWP-Med is leading the Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation Work Package, coordinating activities that will boost the project's impact. |

These measures include the establishment of buffer strips, the creation of a narrow riparian forest, an educational ‘SpongePark’, mulching in urban and peri-urban parks, and the restoration of terraces with soil water harvesting and reuse systems. |

The 1st Multistakeholder Meeting of the ASSICI-GEM project took place on 7 November 2024 in Bizerte, Tunisia. Participants emphasized the importance of applying the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus approach and implementing smart irrigation techniques in selected fields in the Ghar El Melh region as part of climate adaptation efforts. The ASSICI-GEM project, implemented by the GWP-Med, is a collaborative effort involving local and national authorities, funded by the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta and co-financed through the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme. |

During a landmark event held on 25 September 2024, in Larnaca, Cyprus with more than 112 participants from 20 countries, the Mediterranean WEFE Nexus Community of Practice (Med NCoP) was officially launched, within the context of the WEFE4MED project, funded by PRIMA and coordinated by the Cyprus Institute. This 4-year regional project aims to facilitate the identification, testing, dissemination and replication of WEFE Nexus solutions in the Mediterranean, to showcase to policymakers and other stakeholders the advantages of the Nexus approach through specific case studies. GWP-Med is a key project partner. |

These events provided context, interaction and guidance for the initiative highlighting the significant role women play in managing water, energy, and food resources and the need for a gender-transformative approach in policy and governance frameworks. |
