10+ years of impact through Non-Conventional Water Resources and Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus applied solutions in Malta

The successful restoration of Birgu City Square's 800,000 litre rainwater harvesting reservoir, through the Alter Aqua project, marks the completion of 21 NCWR technical applications, supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation, saving more than 20 million litres of water annually, producing multipleWEFE Nexus benefits touching on 20% of the Maltese population.

Through rainwater harvesting, stormwater management and greywater recycling solutions that combine traditional knowledge and innovation, Malta, one of the most water-stressed countries on earth, has revived its historical water-saving culture and is enhancing its resilience to climate challenges.

Selected GWP-Med's success stories presented at the Thematic Sessions of GWP's Network Meeting 2021

The GWP 2021 Network Meeting of Partners, the annual event bringing together the global GWP partnership, took place online on 1 & 2 December under the Theme “Leading Change and Innovation through our Partners”. GWP-Med was actively involved both in facilitating sessions as well as in presenting examples of success stories from the organisation's work around the Mediterranean. Specifically, GWP-Med co-organised and/or contributed to the following sessions: "From Source to Sea: Healthy rivers, healthy oceans", "Youth and Gender", "Innovation and the Private Sector" and "Effective Communication for Advocacy: How to Communicate grass-root initiatives and National Governance processes".

GWP-Med is leading the communication and dissemination component of the Horizon 2020 REXUS project, which is applying innovative engagement and modeling tools to help the shift from Water-Energy-Food Nexus Thinking to Nexus Doing. REXUS is placing stakeholders centre stage, their input used to define the Nexus challenges and pilots' specific goals, according to their needs, aspirations and the parameters of their shared system.

Sharing lessons for successful transboundary cooperation from the Drin River Basin

A special feature on the "5 key lessons from Southeast Europe for successful transboundary cooperation" was shared in the Global GEF IW:LEARN Portfolio News Bulletin in December 2021, drawing on the best practices established by the GEF Drin project, executed by GWP-Med.

In the framework of the AIP WACDEP-G programme, supported by the Austrian Development Agency, two face-to-face trainings were organised in Tunisia aiming to actively engage public sector policy and decision making towards gender transformative action for climate resilient water investments.
