Global Water Leadership (GWL) programme in Palestine successfully concluded |
GWP-Med in partnership with the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) concluded activities in Palestine for the Global Water Leadership (GWL) Programme, a global initiative supporting emerging leadership for improved water, sanitation and hygiene services, and climate resilience. GWL in Palestine delivered a set of outputs based on a structured multi-stakeholder process, including a Response Strategy for IWRM and climate resilience. Further to PWA, practical synergies were developed with the Palestinian Women Water Practitioners Network and the Climate Change Department at the Arab American University. GWL was funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). |

The 'Resilient Thessaly' project, based on a partnership between GWP-Med and the Municipality of Trikala and exclusively funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation, is implementing stormwater management works, within the frame of a holistic intervention. It will provide a protective shield against possible future extreme weather events, such as storm Daniel which severely impacted the region in September 2023. |

The project 'Adapting to Climate Change Impacts through Smart Irrigation in Ghar El Melh wetland area' (ACCISI-GEM) implemented by GWP-Med with financial support from the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta and co-financing from the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme, applies the WEFE Nexus approach through targeted activities in the Ghar El Melh lagoon, one of Tunisia's most precious wetlands. Smart irrigation measures are utilised in selected farms to maximise irrigation efficiency for crops, while renewable energy will help produce food sustainably, making a positive impact in the interface of all Nexus sectors. |

Approximately 60 participants, including the Minister of Environment of Tunisia H.E. Ms Leila Chikhaoui Mahdaoui and the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of EgyptH.E. Mr. Hani Atef Nabhan Sewilam, - discussed the draft âWater-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus Strategy in the Mediterranean Source to Sea continuumâ, and acknowledged its value for enhancing coordinated action across sectoral and spatial levels in the region. The elaboration of the draft Strategy is a joint initiative of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the UN Environment Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP-MAP), and the European Union (EU), and is technically prepared by GWP-Med in the framework of the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme Child Project 2.2, in cooperation with the âEU WES in the ENI Southern Neighbourhood regionâ Project and the PRIMA Foundation, who also organised the 2nd Regional Roundtable, as a side event of the 5th Med Water Forum. |

The interplay of Gender with the WEFE Nexus was the focus of a side-event at the 5th Med Water Forum on 5 February 2024, Tunis, attended by more than 65 stakeholders who discussed the challenges and opportunities for enhancing the understanding of the role of women in the WEFE Nexus and advocating for a gender-transformative approach in the formulation of policies and decision-making processes. At the 1st Mediterranean Green Week (14-16 May 2024), co-organised by the UfM and OECD, speakers included Ms. Tatjana Hema, UNEP/MAP Coordinator and H.E. Dr. Walid Fayad, Minister of Energy and Water, Lebanon, who stressed that âone of the key achievements that we are proud of is the creation of the WEFE Inter-Ministerial Group that is led by our Ministry and facilitated by GWP-Med, with a specific target to develop a WEFE Nexus Plan that will identify common priorities and outline joint actions.â The keynote speech of the Session was given by Prof. Michael Scoullos, GWP-Med Chair, who underlined that systems thinking should be applied in policy development and management, as an appropriate means to seek solutions. |

A 3-year participatory process, facilitated by REXUS pilot leader Soil and Water Research Institute, led to the c0-design by stakeholdres and experts of 20 priority measures for the Pinios river basin pilot, Thessaly, Greece. These measures were recently approved and included in the 2nd Revision of the River Basin Management Plan of Thessaly. GWP-Med, as leader of REXUS Communication and Dissemination, ensured that the measures received extensive media coverage from national and local media. |

A large audience of stakeholders from the Med water community gathered in Tunis from 5-7 February 2024 and contributed to the 5th Mediterranean Water Forum âWorking together for Water Sobrietyâ. The event offered a platform for fruitful discussions on the application of innovative solutions to changing water needs, replicating solutions to emerging global environmental challenges, promoting constructive dialogue conducive to the development of an equitable strategy for the sustainable management of water resources in the Mediterranean and placing water as a political priority at global, regional and national level. The Forum was held under the aegis of the World Water Forum and UfM, was organised by IME and partners. It was part of the preparatory process for the 10th World Water Forum (18-24 May 2024). GWP-Med participated with several representatives, contributing to the Forum's deliberations and co-organising 3 Side Events on WEFE Nexus, Gender and Source-to-Sea. |
