📰 FEATURE: ZERO DROP PROJECT |
Addressing Water Scarcity in a Mediterranean Island Tourist Destination |
Folegandros, a small Mediterranean island of 800 residents, each year faces severe water shortages. With a burgeoning tourism sector attracting more than 40,000 visitors in the summer, water demand far outstrips supply. The Zero Drop project, implemented by GWP-Med in 2022 with funding by The Coca-Cola Foundation and in collaboration with the Municipality of Folegandros, deployed innovative technical solutions to increase water supply by more than 10 million litres annually, and engaged in awareness-raising and capacity building activities to promote a sustainable tourism model. As climate change gathers pace, extreme weather events, like the record-breaking drought that ravaged Europe last summer, are becoming more frequent. These emergencies are increasingly exposing the hidden connections and severe impacts of water across all sectors, highlighting the urgent need for integrated, cross-sectoral approaches to water resources management. As GWP-Med advances action in the frame of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus approach, we are sharing updates from our work in the region: |

📌 The SEE Nexus project, funded by the Austrian Development Agency, was completed in September 2022. Implemented by GWP-Med with the UNECE, in Albania, the Drin and the Drina river basins, the project aimed to introduce the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus approach and catalyse action for its adoption and implementation at the national and transboundary basin levels. Read the Nexus Assessments and their summaries for Albania, the Drin and the Drina river basins. |

Enhancing Environmental Security in the Mediterranean |
The GEF/UN Environment “Mediterranean Sea Programme (MedProgramme): Enhancing Environmental Security” (2019-2024) represents the first GEF programmatic multi-focal area initiative in the Mediterranean, aiming to operationalise priority actions to reduce major transboundary environmental stresses in coastal areas, while strengthening climate resilience and water security and improving the health and livelihoods of coastal populations. WEFE Nexus is in the heart of its approach. 📌The 1st Multi-Stakeholders Consultation Meeting on the WEFE Nexus in Lebanon on 24-25 August, acknowledged the need for better integration of approaches related to the four sectors, including through the establishment of systematic dialogue among the relevant actors. |
📰 The Horizon 2020 REXUS project: from Nexus Thinking to Nexus Doing |
|
During a two-day field trip in 5-6 September 2022 in the Pinios river basin, Greece's agricultural heartland and pilot site for the Horizon 2020 Rexus project, the challenges and opportunities faced by Greece's most productive agricultural basin were analysed. Experts from more than 9 institutions, including the Water Resources Management Plan Elaboration Consortium, the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy, DELTARES, IRSA, GWP-Med, National Agricultural Center of Jordan (NARC), International Agricultural Research and Education Center (UTAEM), Hellenic Agricultural Organisation (HAO) and WWF Greece came together to examine the area’s challenges and current efforts to tackle them through the application of innovative technologies and an integrated Nexus approach to Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems management. Read the article and watch the video produced by GWP-Med, which is leading the project's Communication and Dissemination component. |
📰 The UfM/Sida MENA Μatchmaker II project |
Construction work has advanced for the application of tangible WEFE Nexus Nature-based Solutions in 6 pilot farms in Jordan and Palestine under the MENA Matchmaker II project. Funded by the Union for the Mediterranean and Sida, and contributing to the UfM's Water Agenda, MENA Matchmaker II is building artificial wetlands in each of the farms that will provide tertiary treatment to wastewater from the Wadi Shuayb Wastewater Treatment Plant in Jordan and the Wadi Al-Arroub Plant in Palestine for use in irrigation, and powered by solar energy, contributing to income generation and job creation. |

Water is in our Hands: Adopting water saving habits on the island of Psara |
After the Greek islands of Ai Stratis and Oinousses, Psara, a small idyllic island in the northeastern Aegean of only 400 residents, was the next stop of the "Water Is In Our Hands" initiative, at the heart of which lies the promotion of water saving habits, as a measure for water security and adaptation to climate change. The initiative was launched in Greece in 2020, marking the beginning of a joint water conservation campaign by Finish and GWP-Med in the Greek islands. |
