GWP-Med at the 9th session of the Meeting of the Parties (MoP) to the UN Water Convention |
The 9th session of the MoP to the UN Water Convention was organised from 29 September to 1 October 2021. GWP-Med participated and co-organised a number of side events on transboundary water management, the 'source-to-sea' approach and the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus in the Drin and the Drina River Basins, as well as the role of women in water diplomacy and transboundary cooperation. Achievements of the UNECE and GWP-Med cooperation in applying Nexus solutions in the Western Balkans and the North Western Sahara Aquifer system were presented at the MoP. |
Workshop on Gender Equality for Sustainable Development in Nexus sectors in the Drin |
An online Workshop on āGender Equality (GE) for Sustainable Development in Nexus sectors in Drin Ripariansā took place on 12 October 2021 with the participation of around 55 representatives from different gender related institutions and nexus related sectors, gender focal points, civil society, academia, women empowerment activists and experts from the Drin basin. The workshop was organized by GWP-Med in the framework of the SEE Nexus Project, financed by the Austrian Development Agency and implemented by Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean (GWP-Med) in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). |
One year after the launch of the "Water is in our Hands" initiative at Agios Efstratios, Greece, the remote Mediterranean island has exceeded its water-saving target |
The "Water is in our Hands ' initiative, by Reckitt's Finish and GWP-Med was launched in Greece in 2020 at the remote island of Agios Efstratios at the North tip of the Aegean. The island's 268 permanent residents were equipped with water saving devices and participated in a series of awareness-raising activities, aiming to save 500,000 liters of water for their island over a one-year period. One year later, with the target having been exceeded, GWP-Med spoke with Maria Kakali, Mayor of the island, about the secrets of successful citizen engagement and her island's broader plans for water and energy security. |

New Blueprint for climate resilient, participatory Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus solutions being developed by H2020 Rexus Project |
GWP-Med is leading the communication and dissemination component in this new Horizon 2020 project which aims to close the gap between science and policy in natural resources management. The REXUS project is bringing the Water-Energy-Food Nexus concept to an operational level as a tool for analysis, planning and decision-making, through an innovative integrated approach applied in 5 pilot sites across Europe and Latin America. |

The worldās most significant annual summit on climate change, COP26, came to an end on 12 November after two weeks of discussions and meetings to tackle some of the globeās most pressing problems. GWP played an active role, attending and participating in a range of water-related events which were held for the first time in a designated Water Pavilion. Having this special area, dedicated to discussing water challenges, allowed more than 30 organisations, governments, and companies to deliver innovative, science-based advice to climate decision makers. |
